Peru Explored

The entry below is a synopsis of our speakers talk on 15th November 2023

This show was done by Mrs Ann Scott , starting with one of the sites she visited was Machu Picchu, the moment when you catch your first glimpse of the awe inspiring area high in the mountains and only accessible by foot, is simply unforgettable, and for many this is the reason to visit Peru.

Spend time with the locals during a homestay at Lake Titicaca, watch condors wheeling over the Colca Canyon and unwind in the tranquil sacred valley on this journey through ancient lands. It is more than 7,000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains, and is the most visited tourist destination in Peru.

The Inca civilization had no written language and, after the discovery by the Spanish soldier Baltasar Ocampo, by the end of the 16th century no more Europeans visited the site until the 19th century, so far as is known, so there are no written records of the site while it was in use. Lake Titicaca, straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia in the Andes Mountains, is one of South America's largest lakes and the world’s highest navigable body of water. Said to be the birthplace of the Incas, its home to numerous ruins.

The meaning of the name Titicaca is uncertain, but it has been variously translated as Rock of the Puma or Crag of Lead. Titicaca lies between Andean ranges in a vast basin.

A very good morning for all our members who thoroughly enjoyed the presentation
